Volunteer Info

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Families First!  Our goal is to provide the most rewarding volunteer experience by matching your interests and talents with our clients’ needs.  We offer opportunities from mentoring youth in foster care to adopting families during the holidays.

If you are willing to help with events, donation drives, and other opportunities, please email volunteer@familiesfirst.org, and we will be in touch with upcoming volunteer opportunities and ways you can get involved.

Volunteer FAQ`s

We appreciate your enthusiasm and passion for our mission! Please email volunteer@familiesfirst.org, and we will be in touch with upcoming volunteer opportunities and ways you can get involved.

We do not have a mandatory volunteer orientation; however, a short day-of training may be provided for certain opportunities.

There is no time requirement for volunteering with Families First. We appreciate any time you can give to help us further our mission and serve our community.

Yes!  Children and youth can join their parents for many of our volunteer opportunities.  Children and youth must be accompanied by a supervising adult, and a parent or legal guardian must sign a volunteer waiver for any child/youth under the age of 18 who wishes to participate.  We encourage our passionate youth leaders to get their community involved and help another child in need by hosting a fundraiser or donation drive.

Our main office is on Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard in the Historic Westside of Atlanta, but many of our opportunities are offsite at our other locations, group homes, or other facilities.  You can indicate on the volunteer application the locations where you’re available to serve.

We occasionally have opportunities for you to complete court-ordered service hours.  We only accept community service volunteers with misdemeanor charges that do not include offenses related to children, pets, or theft.  Please contact volunteer@familiesfirst.org for current community service options.

Upcoming Donation Opportunities

November - December 2019

This holiday season, give a gift that will truly brighten the lives of families in metro Atlanta!

The holiday season can be an especially difficult time for the children and families we serve.  Our Adopt-A-Family program connects sponsors with our clients in need.  Whether you are looking to adopt a family for Thanksgiving or for the December holidays, or both, you have the opportunity to spread a little holiday cheer by selecting a family and making a donation.  Knowing that someone cares can give the word “holiday” a whole new meaning!

How it works

We provide a family profile and detailed wish list for each of our clients.  Sponsors then “adopt” a family and purchase the items on their wish list.  Gifts must be delivered to our main campus office - UNWRAPPED – prior to the holidays.  Families First staff will deliver the gifts to the families.

Volunteers are needed to assist with unloading donations, organizing items, wrapping gifts, and sorting deliveries. Please email volunteer@familiesfirst.org to volunteer today!

Stay tuned for our Adopt-A-Family website to go live in October. We can't wait for Adopt-A-Family 2019!

In 2018, with the help of hundreds of volunteers, we provided meaningful holiday experiences for more than 275 families (1,000 individuals). Thank you to all our supporters, donors, and volunteers!

Adopt-A-Family FAQ`s

Family information will be available by mid-October.  If you would like to be notified when the information becomes available online, please email adoptafamily@familiesfirst.org.

All families who apply for assistance through the Families First Adopt-A-Family program are enrolled in or affiliated with our programs throughout the metro Atlanta community.  This includes families who were previously homeless, teen mothers, youth who have aged out of foster care, etc.  These families are living at or below the poverty level or face economic challenges on a daily basis.

No. You can choose to adopt a family for just one holiday.

Once you have selected a family and entered your information, you will receive an email with the family details including their needs and wish list.

The clothing sizes for each family member will be included in the email that is sent to you immediately after you make your selection to adopt your family.  If you adopt more than one family, the information for each family will be on a spreadsheet attached to that confirmation email.

We recommend using the guideline of $50 per family of 2, $100 for a family of four, $150 for a family of six, and $200 for a family of eight. We ask that you donate a $25 gift card for the family to purchase a turkey. Click here for a list of requested food items.

We only accept non-perishable food items!  We cannot accept turkeys or other items that require refrigeration.

We do not have a certain required amount, but suggest you use your best judgment based on the family size.  If you would like to adopt a family personally but don’t have much to spend, we recommend you choose one of the smaller families to sponsor and recruit additional family members, church members, or co-workers to join you in adopting a family!

We do not accept donations of used goods for the holiday season.

For Thanksgiving, we ask that you bring the items in a box, laundry basket, or sturdy reusable shopping bag.  Laundry baskets and reusable shopping bags are also handy for our families after the holidays.  Please avoid using several different grocery bags for one family, if possible.

For the December holidays, we ask that you deliver the gifts UNWRAPPED due to safety and security concerns.  Please deliver your gifts in large heavy duty trash bags so we can ensure your items remain together.  Please make sure the recipient’s family ID number is clearly labeled on all bags.

For most families of four members or less, we recommend that their gifts fit into two (2) large heavy duty garbage bags.  If your family has requested a large item (e.g., a bicycle), you may choose to purchase a gift card in the amount of the item instead of the item itself.  We will gratefully accept larger deliveries, but prefer that most are of a more manageable size due to space constraints at our delivery location.

You are more than welcome to send us gift cards!  We have new families entering our programs every day who will have missed the deadline to apply for assistance this holiday season.  If you choose to send in gift cards for our general use, you can mail them to Families First, ATTN: VOLUNTEER.  Please mail gift cards for Thanksgiving no later than November 5, and for the December Holidays no later than December 5.

Absolutely!  You can also contact us to find out what our current needs are – coats, linens, towels, etc.  If you are interested in Families First being the beneficiary of your organization’s toy or gift drive, please email adoptafamily@familiesfirst.org, and we will send you the details on deadlines and delivery instructions.

Families First is happy to acknowledge your Adopt-A-Family donation for tax purposes. We will provide an in-kind donation form for you to complete. Upon receipt of the completed and signed in-kind donation form, Families First will email you an acknowledgement letter after the holidays which can be submitted to your tax preparer.

We are also going to be posting Adopt-A-Need giving opportunities, something new this year! We have ongoing needs throughout the year for all of our clients, and we are requesting hygiene items, linens and towels, baby goods, coats, and Marta cards (transportation to school/work for our clients). We also have a real need for gift cards to purchase gifts for those clients and their families who enter one of our programs between now and the holidays.
Volunteers are also needed to help with donation drop-off days, sorting and wrapping of gifts at our home office, and assisting with staff pick-up days. Please email volunteer@familiesfirst.org if you would like to volunteer your time as an elf helper behind the scenes!

Baby Basics Drive

April 2020

At Families First, many of our programs help young mothers trying to get their feet on the ground.  Sometimes they have a hard time providing the basics for their children such as diapers, wipes and warm clothing.  Help us provide the basic necessities for those babies by donating to our Baby Basics Drive!

You don’t have to wait until our annual drive in the Spring to provide essentials for moms and babies. You can stay involved year-round by ordering from our Amazon wish list!

Corporations, organizations, and church groups are encouraged to hold a Baby Basics Drive at anytime during the year. Email volunteer@familiesfirst.org if you’d like to get involved.
