2010 Dining For A Difference

Dining For a Difference 2010

Sold out event inspires over 800 supporters to make a difference in the lives of children and families in our community.

The 12th Annual Dining for a Difference was held on Thursday, March 18, 2010 at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta. This was the largest event in its history, attracting over 820 local supporters to join hands with Families First for the sake of children and youth in foster care.

Keynote speakers were Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy, who gave a personal one-on-one converation about their relationship with the Baltimore Ravens' Michael Oher, whom they met when he was 15 and homeless, and later legally adopted. Their amazing story is the subject of the book and Oscar-nominated film The Blind Side.

Families First honored John and Polly Lewis of Decatur, GA with the 2010 Humanitarian Award for their extraordinary achievement of fostering more than 80 children during the past four decades. Their patience, dedication and love for foster children is truly inspiring, and the audience honored the couple with two standing ovations. The Lewis' were featured on NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams for making a difference to so many children they have fostered over the years.

Dining for a Difference also awards three young adults with educational scholarships. The funds may be used for tuition, training, books, child care or other needs. The Carol Dunlap Reiser Scholarship was awarded to Jessica Monroe, a Weaver Gardens program participant, and Rebecca Gebert, a former resident of our Permanency Cooperative Program and now a Independent Living Program participant. The Karen Sibley scholarship benefits the post secondary education of former residents of Families First's foster homes, and this year's scholarship was presented to Zada Wheat -- who incidentially lives with former foster parents John and Polly Lewis.

Families First wishes to thank the Dining for a Difference committee members and are generous sponsors for making the 12th Annual Dining for a Difference such a tremendous success.
