Volunteer FAQ`s

We appreciate your enthusiasm and passion for our mission! At this time, our volunteer portal is under construction. Please email volunteer@familiesfirst.org, and we will be in touch with upcoming volunteer opportunities and ways you can get involved.

Anyone interested in volunteering must first fill out a volunteer application. If you are interested in one or more of our opportunities involved with working directly with families we serve, a background check is required.

No. We do not have a mandatory volunteer orientation. However, a short training is provided the day-of for certain opportunities.

There is no time requirement for volunteering with Families First. We appreciate any time you can give to help us further our mission and serve our community.

Yes! Children can join their parents in any of our volunteer opportunities. We also encourage our passionate youth leaders to get their community involved and help another child in need by hosting a fundraiser or donation drive.

Our main office is in Midtown, but most of our opportunities are off-site at our other offices, group homes or other facilities, depending on the type of volunteer work you’re interested in. There is a place on the volunteer application to specify the areas you’re willing to volunteer.

We occasionally have opportunities for community service volunteers. We only accept community service volunteers with misdemeanor charges that do not include children, pet or theft-related issues. Contact volunteer@familiesfirst.org for current community service options.

Upcoming Donation Opportunities

You don’t have to wait until our annual drive in the Spring to provide essentials for moms and babies. You can stay involved year-round by ordering from our Amazon wish list!

Corporations, organizations, and church groups are encouraged to hold a Baby Basics Drive at anytime during the year. Email volunteer@familiesfirst.org if you’d like to get involved.

Adopt-A-Family

Gift

This holiday season, give a gift that will truly brighten the lives of families in metro-Atlanta.

The holiday season can be an especially hard time for the children and families we serve. Our Adopt-A-Family program connects sponsors with our clients in need at the holiday season.  Whether Thanksgiving or the December holidays (or both!), you have the opportunity to spread a little holiday cheer by selecting a family and making a donation.

How it works

We provide a detailed wish list and family profile for each of our clients.  Sponsors then ‘adopt’ a family and purchase the items on their wish list.  Items must be delivered to our office with client number and group number before the holidays.  Families First staff then delivers the gifts to the families.

Just knowing that somebody cares can give the word “holiday” a whole new meaning.

Please check back in October as new families become available to adopt and Adopt-A-Family kicks off for the 2018 holiday season!

Volunteers

Volunteers are needed to assist with unloading items, organizing items, and everything in between during our Adopt-A-Family donation drives. Email us at adoptafamily@familiesfirst.org for more information on getting involved during the holidays!

Adopt-A-Family FAQ`s

All families who apply for assistance through Families First’s Adopt-A-Family program are enrolled in or affiliated with our programs throughout the metro-Atlanta community. This includes families that were previously homeless, teen mothers, youth that have aged out of foster care, etc.

These families are living at our below the poverty level or face economic challenges on a daily basis. Read more about our programs here.

This is on a case by case basis and can be discussed with our Volunteer Coordinator once you have adopted a family. Unfortunately, youth in foster care are not able to meet with Adopt-A-Family sponsors.

No. You can choose to adopt a family for just one holiday.

Once you have selected a family and entered your information, you will receive an email with the family details including their needs and wish list.

The clothing sizes for each family member will be included in the email that is sent to you immediately after you make your selection to adopt your family.  If you adopt more than one family, the information for each family will be on a spreadsheet attached to that confirmation email.

We recommend using the guideline of $50 per family of 2, $100 for a family of 4, $150 for a family of 6, and $200 for a family of 8.

We only accept non-perishable food items and ask that you donate a gift card in place of a turkey. We cannot accept turkeys or other items that require refrigeration. Click here for a list of suggested food items.

We do not have a certain required amount but suggest you use your best judgement based on the family size. If you’d like to adopt a family personally but don’t have that much to spend, we recommend you recruit additional family members, church members or co-workers to join you! The more the merrier!

Although we accept gently used items throughout the year, we do not accept donations of used goods for the holiday season.

Thanksgiving, we ask that you bring the items in a box, laundry basket or sturdy, reusable shopping bag. Laundry baskets and reusable shopping bags can also come in handy for our families receiving your donation after the holidays. Please try to avoid using several different grocery bags if possible.

For the December holidays, we do not require that you wrap the gifts, but if you are so inclined, we are happy to receive gifts wrapped. We ask that you deliver your gifts in large trash bags so we can ensure your items stay together. Just make sure the recipient’s name, family number and group number are clearly labeled on all bags.

For most families of less than five members, we recommend that their gifts fit into two (2) large garbage bags or less.  If your family has requested large items, you may choose to purchase gift cards instead of the item itself.  We will accept larger deliveries, we just prefer that most are of a more manageable size due to space constraints at our delivery location.

You are more than welcome to send us gift cards.  We have new families entering our programs every day who may not make the deadline for applying for assistance this holiday season.  If you choose to send in gift cards for no family in particular, you can mail them to Families First AT LEAST ONE WEEK PRIOR TO THE HOLIDAY (for both Thanksgiving and Christmas).

Absolutely!  Many families who are unable to participate in the program still have great need, and we are able to invite them to a “Free Store” a week before the holidays to select from what we have received from organizations that conduct Toy Drives. You can also contact us to find out what our current needs are – winter coats, linens, etc.

If you are interested in Families First being the beneficiary of your organization’s toy or gift drive, please email adoptafamily@familiesfirst.org and we will send you the details on deadlines and delivery instructions.

Families First is happy to acknowledge your Adopt-A-Family donations for tax purposes.  However, current IRS regulations prohibit us from including a monetary value of the donation on our acknowledgement letter.  We will provide a description of your donation on our letter, but in order for you to receive tax credit for your donation you must provide receipts for the items or gift cards you purchase.  These receipts, attached to the acknowledgement letter that we will send to you after the holiday, can be submitted to your tax preparer.  In a nutshell, if you are planning to submit your donation for tax credit, be sure to save your receipts!

Volunteers are needed to help with unloading, sorting and wrapping of gifts at our home office. On this page find out more about becoming a Families First volunteer.
